Voice and throat
Hoarseness
A hoarse voice may sound rough, weak or breathy. A cold or heavy voice use can cause a short-lived change. A voice that stays different needs an examination of the vocal cords.

Why does the voice change?
Swelling after a cold, shouting and repeated voice strain are common causes. Small growths, such as nodules or polyps, can affect how the vocal cords meet. Smoking, reflux and a cord that does not move normally are other possible causes.
What a voice assessment involves
The doctor asks about your work, singing, smoking and any swallowing problems. A slim camera passed through the nose or mouth shows the vocal cords. Further tests depend on what is seen.
How to look after your voice
Drink water, reduce long conversations and avoid shouting. Whispering can also strain the voice. Avoid smoking and smoky spaces. Teachers and singers may need a plan for using their voice while it recovers.
Treatment depends on the cause
Many short episodes settle with time and voice care. Voice therapy helps you speak with less strain. Some growths need removal or a small tissue sample. Persistent hoarseness should be examined before starting repeated courses of medicines.
When should I be seen?
Arrange an assessment if hoarseness lasts 2–3 weeks, and sooner if you have a neck lump, trouble swallowing or cough up blood. Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing needs emergency care.

A note on your care
“Your voice is part of how you connect with people. Whether you sing, teach or simply enjoy a conversation, tell me what has changed and what you miss.”

Common questions
Is a hoarse voice always serious?
No. Many causes are treatable and not cancer. An ongoing voice change still needs a proper look, especially if you smoke.
Will I need voice surgery?
Often not. The examination helps decide whether voice care, therapy or a procedure is most useful.
Should I whisper to rest my voice?
No. Whispering can strain the voice too. Reduce speaking and use a comfortable, gentle voice when you need to talk.
How long should I wait after a cold?
A cold-related voice change often settles within one to two weeks. If it is not improving after two to three weeks, arrange a review; seek help sooner for breathing or swallowing problems.
