Understanding a voice assessment
Why the vocal folds are examined, and what the camera visit is like.

A voice assessment looks at the vocal folds while you make sound. Listening to the voice from across a desk is not enough, because a tired voice and a fold that is not moving can resemble each other.
The camera
A slim flexible camera usually passes through the nose, after a numbing spray if one is used at that clinic. You may be asked to say a long “ee”. The look lasts a few minutes. It feels odd. It should not be a surprise sprung on you in the chair.
What the result is for
The finding might be swelling, a small lesion, a fold that does not close, or a larynx that looks healthy. Each of those has a different next step: time, voice therapy, treatment of a cause, or, less often, a procedure. A normal examination is a result. It is allowed to be the outcome.
If you use your voice professionally, say so at the start. The advice about rest is different for a singer than for someone who can stay quiet for a week.
