Glue ear

Glue ear is fluid trapped behind the eardrum, often after a cold. It can make hearing come and go, usually without severe pain. Many children improve naturally, but hearing and speech concerns should be checked.

What parents may notice

  • Turning up the television or speaking more loudly.
  • Missing instructions, seeming distracted or becoming tired from listening.
  • Speech that is unclear or slower to develop.

Checking hearing and fluid

An ear examination, hearing test and a test of eardrum movement help confirm the problem. The plan depends on how much hearing and daily life are affected, not just whether fluid is present.

Treatment options

If the impact is mild, a planned review allows time for the fluid to clear. More significant hearing difficulty may need earlier support. Options include hearing devices, a special balloon exercise for children able to use it, or grommets to let air into the middle ear. Antibiotics, antihistamines and nasal steroids are not routine treatments for glue ear itself.

Helping your child hear

Get their attention before speaking, face them and reduce background noise. Let the teacher know; sitting closer and checking instructions can help. Keep the planned hearing review even if symptoms seem better.

A note on your care

“Tell me what you notice at home, and what your child’s teacher notices too. Small changes in listening, confidence or participation can be useful clues.”

Common questions

How long does glue ear last?

It often clears within about three months. Some children have repeated episodes or longer-lasting fluid, so follow-up matters.

Does every child need grommets?

No. The decision depends on hearing, communication and the effect on daily life. Hearing support and monitoring are also options.

Can glue ear look like poor attention?

Yes. A child who misses speech may seem distracted or tired. Hearing should be checked rather than assuming it is a behaviour problem.

Will a nasal spray clear the fluid?

Nasal steroids are not routinely recommended for glue ear itself. A separate nasal allergy may still need treatment.
