Grommets

Grommets are tiny tubes placed in the eardrum to let air reach the middle ear. They may help children with persistent glue ear and hearing difficulty, or selected children with repeated ear infections.

Children's ENT
Purpose
Ventilate the middle ear while the tube stays open.
Procedure
Usually a short operation under general anaesthetic in children.
Follow-up
A hearing check confirms whether hearing has improved.
  1. When are grommets considered?

The decision depends on hearing tests, the duration of fluid and its effect on communication or daily life. Monitoring, hearing devices and a balloon exercise may be alternatives. Recurrent infections need their own assessment.

  2. What happens during the operation?

The surgeon makes a tiny opening in the eardrum, removes fluid and places the tube. There is no cut on the outside of the ear. Most children go home the same day when well enough.

  3. After the operation

Ask for written advice about drops and keeping water out. A hearing test is commonly arranged around six weeks later. Most grommets fall out on their own over time; the eardrum usually closes afterwards.

  4. What problems can occur?

Discharge, a blocked tube, scarring or a hole that remains after the tube comes out are possible. Fluid may return and another treatment may be needed. Persistent discharge, increasing pain or fever should be checked.

A note on your care

“The conversation should start with your child’s hearing and everyday life. Ask what improvement we hope to see and how we will check whether the tubes have helped.”

Common questions

General answers, so you can arrive with a clearer sense of what to ask.

Can my child swim with grommets?

Keep the ears dry for the first two weeks unless the surgeon gives different advice. After that, advice depends on healing, ear discharge and the type of swimming.

Will grommets fix speech delay?

They may improve hearing when fluid is the cause. Speech or language difficulties may also need separate assessment and support.

Will the tubes need to be removed?

Most fall out naturally. A tube that stays in too long or causes problems may need removal.

Can adults have grommets?

Yes, in selected cases. Persistent middle-ear fluid in an adult needs assessment of the cause before choosing treatment.
