Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy removes tonsil tissue through the mouth. It may help with frequent, disruptive tonsillitis or breathing problems caused by enlarged tonsils. Recovery needs planning, especially for pain relief and drinking.

Approach
Through the mouth, under general anaesthetic.
Time off
Often around two weeks, depending on the operation and recovery.
Key warning
Fresh bleeding after surgery needs urgent hospital care.
  1. When is surgery considered?

The number, severity and effect of infections matter. Bring a record of illnesses and missed work or school. Surgery may also be considered for sleep-related obstruction or other findings that need investigation. Monitoring remains an option when symptoms are mild.

  2. What happens during surgery?

The surgeon removes all or most of the tonsil tissue. There is no external neck cut. The technique affects recovery and the chance of tissue growing back, so ask which method is planned.

  3. What the first two weeks can be like

A sore throat and ear pain are common, and pain may increase several days after the operation before improving. A white healing layer can appear where the tonsils were. Follow the prescribed pain plan, drink regularly and eat as advised. Arrange time away from school, work and strenuous activity.

  4. Risks and when to seek help

Bleeding can occur soon after surgery or during the following two weeks. Fresh blood from the mouth or nose, blood clots or vomiting blood needs urgent hospital assessment, even if it stops. Trouble drinking, reduced urination, fever or uncontrolled pain needs prompt medical advice.

Common questions

General answers, so you can arrive with a clearer sense of what to ask.

Will I still get sore throats?

You can still have throat infections, but removing the tonsils prevents infections in the removed tonsil tissue.

Is ear pain normal afterwards?

It can be. Pain from the healing throat is often felt in the ears. Worsening pain despite the prescribed plan should be checked.

Can tonsils grow back?

Some tissue may remain, particularly after a partial removal, and can enlarge again. Ask how the chosen technique affects this risk.

When can I return to work or school?

Often after about two weeks, once drinking, eating and energy have recovered. The surgical team may recommend a different interval for your procedure.
