Snoring and sleep
Sleep apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea means the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. It can leave you tired even after a full night in bed. A sleep study helps confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment.

Why it deserves attention
Repeated breathing interruptions disturb sleep. Untreated sleep apnoea can affect concentration and contribute to longer-term health problems, including high blood pressure. Avoid driving when sleepy.
How is sleep apnoea diagnosed?
A sleep test records breathing and oxygen levels overnight. It may take place at home or in a sleep centre, depending on the person. An ENT examination looks for narrowing in the nose and throat but cannot measure sleep apnoea on its own.
What treatment can help?
CPAP is a machine that supplies air through a mask to keep the airway open. Weight management, side sleeping and reducing alcohol can help some people. A fitted mouth device or surgery may be options in selected cases. The sleep team helps match treatment to the findings.
Children need a separate assessment
Large tonsils or adenoids can contribute. Poor sleep may show up as restlessness, behaviour changes or difficulty concentrating. Treatment is tailored to the child; follow-up checks whether breathing has improved.

A note on your care
“Tell me what an ordinary morning feels like, not just how loudly you snore. Feeling rested and staying alert during the day are important parts of the conversation.”

Common questions
Can I have sleep apnoea without being overweight?
Yes. Airway shape and other factors can contribute, so weight alone cannot rule it out.
If snoring stops, is the apnoea gone?
Not necessarily. Symptoms and sometimes repeat sleep testing are used to check treatment. Do not stop a prescribed CPAP treatment without advice.
Can the sleep test be done at home?
For some adults, yes. The clinician chooses a home test or a study in a sleep centre based on symptoms and other health conditions.
What if I cannot tolerate the CPAP mask?
Tell the sleep team. A different fit, mask or settings may help. Do not give up on treatment without discussing alternatives.
