Septoplasty

Septoplasty straightens the wall between the nostrils to improve breathing through the nose. It is considered when a bent septum causes ongoing blockage that other treatment cannot adequately relieve.

Nose and sinus
Aim
Improve airflow through the nose.
Approach
Usually through cuts inside the nostrils.
Recovery
Often around 1–2 weeks away from work; swelling lasts longer.
  1. When can it help?

An examination should show that the septum contributes to the blockage. Allergy and swollen tissue may need treatment first. Sprays cannot straighten the septum, but they may relieve enough swelling to avoid an operation.

  2. What happens during surgery?

Under anaesthetic, the surgeon reshapes or repositions the bent cartilage and bone. Splints or packing may support the septum while it heals. Sometimes swollen tissue on the sides of the nose is reduced at the same time.

  3. What recovery is like

The nose can feel more blocked at first because of swelling and dressings. Mild blood-stained discharge is common early on. Follow the team’s advice about rinses, nose blowing and activity. The improvement in breathing is judged after swelling settles, not on the first day.

  4. Risks to understand

Bleeding, infection, a hole in the septum, continued blockage, altered smell and an unintended change in the nose’s shape are possible. Some people need further treatment. Heavy bleeding or a nose that becomes increasingly painful and blocked needs urgent advice.

  5. Before the operation

Bring your medicine list and follow the hospital’s fasting instructions. Ask about splint removal, time off work and who to contact if you have a problem after going home.

A note on your care

“Before choosing surgery, tell me when your nose feels most blocked and what you have already tried. The aim is to understand what a straighter septum could change for you.”

Common questions

General answers, so you can arrive with a clearer sense of what to ask.

Will it change how my nose looks?

The intended change is inside the nose. Cosmetic reshaping is a different operation, though an unwanted change in shape is a possible risk.

When can I return to work?

Many people need around one to two weeks, depending on their job and recovery. Dusty or physically demanding work may need a longer break.

Will it cure my allergy or snoring?

It does not cure allergy. It may improve nasal breathing, but snoring can also come from the throat.

Will I need nasal packing?

Not always. Ask whether packing or splints are planned and when any non-dissolving material will be removed.
